Paul Newman I've Loved You Since 5th grade!
Paul Newman was one of THE actors during my very impressionable years. He was our Brad Pitt with his blue eyed good looks or maybe our George Clooney with his laid back charm. HE was Cool Hand Luke who our husbands still quote. He was the bad boy/ hero we absolutely fell in love with in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.... I wanted to ride that bike and have rain dropping on my head ....The Sting was the original Oceans except much better. And later, Absence of Malice with Salley Fields made me want to be rescued by Paul Newman or maybe to rescue him from her.
They are still great films. See them all if you have not.
Paul Newman and his wonderful wife Joanne Woodward also started in the movie Mr. and Mrs. Bridges. While I don't remember that much about the movie I remember the story from reading the books. Man..... do I remember the books from which the movie was adapted.
Karen, my sister, and I have always loved to read and looked for any opportunity to sit back and read when we took our kids to the beach. While Karen read library books, I read paper backs because I would never risk the wrath of the librarian by taking one of HER books near the water.Yes, there is a deep seated fear of Librarians from my past that I have yet to uncover. (Nurses too!)
Anyway, one year I decided to take library books to the beach since Karen had never had an accident with a library book. I checked out several books including two brand new never before checked out books, Mr. Bridges and the companion book Mrs. Bridges. Each spouse tells the story of their marriage from their own ( of course very different) point of view.
I found the story very interesting, but the books themselves gave me a story of my own.
The first day at the beach I left the book Mrs. Bridges, that I had just begun to read, in my beach chair. The chair was AT LEAST 40 FEET from the edge of the water. We were just beginning to jump waves and have fun in the water when a really strong wave almost knocked us over, and may have taken a kid or two under, but the destruction that that wave caused up the beach is all that I can remember. All I could see was that wave racing all the way up the beach to jump into my beach chair. No other wave had come near that chair nor did any other wave venture up that far for some time. I just stood and stared in shock as that evil wave soaked that library book and returned to the sea. The book was drenched - soaked through from the first page to the last. Well, I read that wet book page by wet page as it dissolved in my hand. In the end there was only a cover and it too was WET! All week I worried about returning Mr. Bridges without his companion.
After searching every bookstore in the area I told myself that I was a grown woman and I would simply say that I would not be able to return that book and needed to pay for it. Of course, it was not that easy. After several questions which I did not answer to the first librarian's satisfaction a new librarians was called in to help. I could tell the librarian really wanted to know what happened to HER book. She said books always turn up and this one surely would also. But I stuck to my plan, check book in hand, and only replied," I will not be able to return that book. I need to pay for it."
Thank you Paul Newman for the entertainment. We'll miss you. You were a great actor, American. Sorry I destroyed your wife's book!
( Old story to all of you but a new twist!.... maybe)

BREAKING NEWS: New Prime Number Discovered!
LOS ANGELES - Mathematicians at UCLA have discovered a 13 million-digit prime number, a long-sought milestone that makes them eligible for a $100,000 prize
The group found the 46th known Mersenne prime last month on a network of 75 computers running Windows XP. The number was verified by a different computer system running a different algorithm.
"We're delighted," said UCLA's Edson Smith, the leader of the effort. "Now we're looking for the next one, despite the odds."
Mersenne primes — named for their discoverer, 17th century French mathematician Marin Mersenne — are expressed as 2P-1, or two to the power of "P" minus one. P is itself a prime number. For the new prime, P is 43,112,609.Me: Isn't this exciting and so mind boggling! I may not be able to post for a while. I'll be looking for the next prime number! I may need another computer. I wonder if the beast upstairs could help.
I just noticed I have a lot of breaking news for you girls. I'm just here to keep you informed!
Just sign me, The Math Nerd.

Breaking News in Fashion !
On The Today Show this morning they had a segment on transition dressing. You know, how to wear some of your summer clothes on into early fall. The first woman had on a brown tank top and a brown and red skirt. The second woman had on a light colored tank top with medium gray slacks. The third woman had on a blue and turquoise sun dress with a little black tank underneath. Ready? You may want to take notes......I really wish I had pictures so you could get a better understanding of this concept. The first big "make over" was to add a belted brown sweater. The belt just gave it that "new" look. They also changed her footwear from sandals to pumps. For the second "make over" they added a jacket AND a little scarf AND boots. To the third outfit they added a black jacket and tights! Do you have this? Maybe I should recap. One should add a sweater or light jacket and shoes in the fall.
I think I may be able to get a part time job as a segment producer for The Today Show. I already have some thoughts about winter dressing........coats, boots, scarfs.tights..... And for spring.... And yes, girls, I mean to use these quotation marks.

Beauty and the Beast, cont.
True as it can be.
Barely even friends.
Then somebody bends.
THE BEAST UPSTAIRS HAS BENT!!!!.... unexpectedly.
Just a little change.
Small to say the least!
I kept waiting for the townspeople to storm the front gate, I mean door and save ME. But little Chip, Leslie, came to the rescue and saved the beast- from being thrown from the top of the castle … well the southern window from the top of our house, anyway.
So, finally… We have an almost complete outfit for Bennett. Just needs button holes and buttons. If the camera that Jimmy gave me was up and running I would have a picture of a little red and white checked Jon-Jon suit with BLL monogrammed on the front in black right here.
It took sooo long I know its almost time for long pants but Leslie assured me Bennett would wear it every day until he out grows it. He’ll wear it with knee socks and a little turtle neck.
Jimmy said that is one nice outfit. It only took 3 months and several thousand dollars. He's not sure we can afford another one.

I have moved my blogs to my new home to make it easier for all of us. Watch for my first give away.
Love you!
Welcome to the Century posted 8/19/08
Then came the JUST! After several tries which included a lot of praying and a little crying I JUST gave up and went to school. I may have an IPod and I may have a laptop but I’m surely not a techno geek. I’ll try again later. Tomorrow is another day.
Late Night Visitor or "What? More New Friends?" 9/5/08
Have a great weekend!
Fashion and politics posted: 9/4/08
Suddenly there is fashion in politics again. Not since Jackie was in the White House has fashion come from the political scene. Of course we did get the little bow just over the bangs from Lucy Johnson…. Just picture that……. If you can't, I have a picture somewhere of that very fashion... Anyway, it's not just designer gowns for the balls but FASHION AT EVERY STOP! The wives and THE WOMAN….Should be interesting.
New Friends posted : 8/28/08
I also tried to make friends at ABAC. But no one was interested. They did not seem to want to add to their numbers. They seemed irrational and a little obtuse. Who knew Math people were so cold and calculating! ( HEE! HEE! I kill me!)
Oh, well! I have made some new friends. There is Rechelle (The Country Doctor’s Wife), who is a friend of Laurie’s friend Ree (The Pioneer Woman). Rechelle is LOL funny and Ree is an excellent cook and sometimes has give-aways for her friends. I now check in with Ree and Rechelle every morning. We all have such full lives!!!
Then there are Michael, Kerri and Misty. We spent a LOT of time together for a couple of weeks but they are busy young people so we don’t see each other as much now. I did catch Michael on the Today show this morning. He seemed happy and healthy. I’m waiting to hear from Kerri and Misty. They both hope to start families now that the games are over. I’ll miss seeing them every day but just want the best for them. They both need someone else to hug on and pop on the butt besides each other.
This week I am being courted by Michelle and Joe. I’m trying to hold off to see what John can offer me next week. At least I have my ABAC students. Some of them email me and some even call me at home.
Mondays!!! posted 8/27/08
My laptop and I are heading up to the secret room to hang out with the software deprived embroidery sewing machine, to lounge on the sofa and HIDE! We'll peer out the window at the UPS man and pretend we're not at home. Someone save this so you can document the beginning of my becoming the eccentric old crazy who lives in a hidden room in the house down the lane.
School StartedToday and I Didn't Go. posted 8/11/08
School started today and for the first time in thirty years I didn’t go. Oh, the guilt! I must walk twice today in the heat as a penance for not going to school. Oh the guilt!
But, oh, the guilty pleasures of being out in the world when everyone else is in school. The world does keep going when school starts. People shop, eat out, buy gas…. who knew? On Interstate 75 today only one person passed me as I drove just above the speed limit. The world keeps going but it seems today everyone on the outside had a slower pace. Maybe they were sighing with some relief that order had been restored. The first day of school… filled with endless possibilities and great expectations.
Anyway, while I was AWOL today, I talked with a cute little girl who was working in Talbot’s (I think she was too young to go to school). She had a tiny little nose ring- a diamond stud. In the past I would have judged her harshly over that, but I recently read in Ezkiel where God expresses His love for Jerusalem by describing how He rescued her from the side of the road where she had been left to die after her unwanted birth. It goes on to describe how He clothed her with fine clothing, gold and silver jewelry, and placed a jewel in her nose, earrings in her ears, and a beautiful crown on her head. Do you think God is trying to take the pleasure out of my judging?
Love you,Pink Flip Flops posted 8/14/08
My pink flip flops just died. I have had them for many years. They were not fancy. Just plain drug store flip flops that I normally wore only occasionally at home. Since moving to the country I always wear shoes even inside and the pinks have, I mean had (it's still hard to believe they are gone) become one of my favs. They seldom left home, but lately they became part of a very cute outfit- my brown yoga pants and white sleeveless polo shirt. They added just the splash of color that I needed. Just this morning we were all at the grocery store. Don't worry family we were not at the national chain just a regional chain. But this afternoon as I was running up stairs to find the hammer that I needed to use on the turkey that I was preparing to grill, the little tong on my left shoe just gave out. At first I thought that I would be able to stick it back in as I did when I was a kid; but it was broken beyond repair. They were old and we had had a good time together. Or, maybe they committed suicide. Maybe my endless summer did them in.
Thank God I'm a Country Girl posted: 8-7-08
Back at Still Waters Jimmy and I settled in to shell the pink eyes he had picked yesterday late and I was transported back to Briarwood Road, 1960s. (Yes, apparently it is still legal to shell peas in your own home if you live more than 8 miles from any city limits). I remember many summer days of shelling peas or beans then blanching, draining, cooling and finally bagging to freeze the little jewels. I loved peas and would count and recount the bags to see if we had enough to have them at least once a week. And since Daddy loved beans I wanted to make sure he had enough of those. I realize now how filling those shelves in the freezer satisfied something inside of me. I'm back to my roots. Thank God I'm a country girl!
Love you!
