Leaving Birmingham

Monday, Memorial Day, was a hot, overcast, muggy day in Birmingham, Alabama. Think sauna ....add a large truck waiting to be loaded.....and heavy furniture to fill it....and a set of stairs. And at least a hundred and eighty nine boxes filled with who knows what. ... perhaps with memories .... but they were heavy memories. (All of those things not in boxes were an entirely different matter.)

Up and down the stairs, arranging and rearranging, stuffing things into every free space including both of our vehicles until everything was loaded (thankfully with assistance) and we headed home. The Alabama skies did not shine on us but almost washed us off the road and Georgia welcomed us the same way.

This morning the truck was unloaded ( with more assistance) and the contents stored until Laurie decides exactly where she will live. I suppose that means at least one more move, but for now Laurie's at home and we are going to enjoy having her with us.

Thank you Jimmy for all of your hard work on one more move. Do you think you have at least one move left in you?

Laurie recently read me this quote from Aristotle with which she related or hopes to relate : "The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet." She's thankful for the education but ready for the fruit. She begins her career with an ENT group out of Valdosta and Tifton this Monday. May the juice of this fruit run down her elbows as if she were eating a Georgia peach fresh off the tree in the orchard!

A Southern Wedding on a Saturday Morning

Our family friends' daughter and her long time sweetheart were married earlier today . I left home at 6:45 this morning to travel to middle Georgia for the late morning ceremony. Arriving on this overcast morning in plenty of time to go with my family to the quaint country waterside location. Yes it sprinkled a bit as we arrived but it cleared in plenty of time for us to find our seats in the very picturesque setting. The chairs were set up in a clearing between groups of large flowering trees where the blossoms had fallen and carpeted the ground. So, my little niece decided to be a flower girl. She enjoyed picking up the blossoms and tossing them back to the ground.

The groom walked to the front along with his father who served as his best man and the ring bearer- the groom's well behaved black lab. The bride was beautiful in a simple cut strapless A-line wedding gown made more eloquent by the beautiful fabric. I'm not sure if it was beaded or what exactly, but it was very pretty.

During the final song a soft misting rain began. One umbrella popped open and almost instantaneously every person was covered by an umbrella resulting in a rainbow of color across the congregation. I'm very sorry that I did not have my camera to capture this sight. The umbrellas were actually quite pretty and it was interesting to be in a large group but in your own little world while listening to the song and watching the couple beaming at one another with no apparent thought to the gentle sprinkling. As the song ended so did the rain.

The reception was a traditional southern picnic with fried chicken, pulled pork, chicken salad, and potato salad. As well as mini tarts with lemon, chocolate and pecan fillings. And Mexican wedding cookies. And two of my favorites : spinach dip with corn chips and cheese spread with strawberry jam served with Ritz crackers, of course. Oh, I almost forgot the tomato and cucumber sandwiches. Each layer of the bride's cake was a different flavor which made it very difficult for some of us to choose, but my nephew was such a gentleman and great host for our table that he choose hummingbird for me. It was possibly the best wedding cake I have ever eaten. (Thanks Wes! You were a great host. As was your dad.)

Congrats Jessica and Caleb! Thanks Andrea and Tim for your hospitality. Beautiful ( and tasty) wedding celebration.

Beginning at the Beginning

Early morning March 7, 2005 found us driving an unfamiliar route. We set off from Athens to Commerce where we headed northeast on Interstate 85 exiting onto White Horse Road which took us to Travelers Rest. Through Travelers Rest to Asheville where we crossed multiple lanes of traffic in less than a city block to reach "Future 26" that would take us on a beautiful ride up and over the Mountains of western North Carolina and into Tennessee. The morning turned rainy and the temperature dropped as we passed the exits for Forks of Ivy and Jonesborough. When we found the exit to Elizabethton we turned to locate the campus of East Tennessee State University next door in Johnson City. Nestled in a valley in the hills of Eastern Tennessee the campus was most picturesque. It could easily have been the setting for a movie starring Kelvin Kline as a professor of literature at a small New England college who hopes to instill in the freshmen class of 1968 his own love of poetry only to have them teach him that real life relationships are more important than anything you may read in a book..... Anyway, we located the building an hour and a half early then rode just off campus to purchase an umbrella for the rain/snow mix that was coming down. A block away we found a Subway where we had lunch and waited for the most important appointment. While parking on campus was very limited we managed to find a place and walk through the now falling snow into the building at the appointed time. Up the stairs and down the hall where we were met by Kelvin himself dressed in slightly frumpy layers and sitting in an office perfectly designed as a backdrop for our story, book shelves overflowing with books, periodicals, folders, maps and globes. The floor was also covered with stacks of folders and the printer as well as some folders were overflowing with obviously important information. The professor played by Kelvin talked with all of us then escorted the actual interviewee down the hall to the conference room to meet the committee leaving us to anxiously pace his office and gaze out the window at the snow.
After an eternity, which actually only lasted a little more than an hour, we headed back into the snow to discover more about the area, since our first impression was that this tiny town that appeared to be a former mining village may not have four more years of life.
Of course a block past Rite Aid, where we purchased our umbrella, a modern spread out town of many shopping centers and unlimited restaurants met us and in fact spread out in all directions.

After many subsequent visits I am amazed that we were even able to meander off the interstate and find our way to campus that March morning without seeing ANY of Johnson City. We thought the Subway and Rite Aid and maybe a Bi Lo would be extent of the shopping in Johnson City. It must have been raining harder than I remembered.

In just a few (very long) days Laurie received the email welcoming her to the Audiology program at ETSU. And the story began.

Bennett Turns Two

Bennett celebrated his second birthday with a pool party.
Yes ,we have a pool. In fact............

we had two pools for this special party.

We had balloons.

These balloons had to leave the party early.

Of course Bennett loved his cake.

Since Bennett started pre-school, he is all about cake.

The other little ones played on while Bennett ate his cake.
They did not get cake. They do not go to pre-school yet.

Here Bennett is saying, "I NEED more cake!" He did not however get more cake.

Hannan did not get cake but he did have a bite of ice cream.
I'm not sure he actually ate any, but he wore some.

Unlike most one year olds, a two year old is ready to unwrap his own gifts.

But not quickly enough for some of the guest.

Several rides were enjoyed but Aunt La's little car is still
a big hit after all these years.

Mallory gets her time driving the car.

Bennett loved his new Thomas the Train.......
as well as Veggie Tales...
Elmo............
sing alongs....
books......
and a new stool to help him climb up onto things!
Its amazing that a two year old has "his things" that he loves.

Love you Baby B.....
Love you Big Boy Bennett!!
