Paul Newman I've Loved You Since 5th grade!

Paul Newman was one of THE actors during my very impressionable years. He was our Brad Pitt with his blue eyed good looks or maybe our George Clooney with his laid back charm. HE was Cool Hand Luke who our husbands still quote. He was the bad boy/ hero we absolutely fell in love with in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.... I wanted to ride that bike and have rain dropping on my head ....The Sting was the original Oceans except much better. And later, Absence of Malice with Salley Fields made me want to be rescued by Paul Newman or maybe to rescue him from her.

They are still great films. See them all if you have not.

Paul Newman and his wonderful wife Joanne Woodward also started in the movie Mr. and Mrs. Bridges. While I don't remember that much about the movie I remember the story from reading the books. Man..... do I remember the books from which the movie was adapted.

Karen, my sister, and I have always loved to read and looked for any opportunity to sit back and read when we took our kids to the beach. While Karen read library books, I read paper backs because I would never risk the wrath of the librarian by taking one of HER books near the water.Yes, there is a deep seated fear of Librarians from my past that I have yet to uncover. (Nurses too!)

Anyway, one year I decided to take library books to the beach since Karen had never had an accident with a library book. I checked out several books including two brand new never before checked out books, Mr. Bridges and the companion book Mrs. Bridges. Each spouse tells the story of their marriage from their own ( of course very different) point of view.
I found the story very interesting, but the books themselves gave me a story of my own.

The first day at the beach I left the book Mrs. Bridges, that I had just begun to read, in my beach chair. The chair was AT LEAST 40 FEET from the edge of the water. We were just beginning to jump waves and have fun in the water when a really strong wave almost knocked us over, and may have taken a kid or two under, but the destruction that that wave caused up the beach is all that I can remember. All I could see was that wave racing all the way up the beach to jump into my beach chair. No other wave had come near that chair nor did any other wave venture up that far for some time. I just stood and stared in shock as that evil wave soaked that library book and returned to the sea. The book was drenched - soaked through from the first page to the last. Well, I read that wet book page by wet page as it dissolved in my hand. In the end there was only a cover and it too was WET! All week I worried about returning Mr. Bridges without his companion.

After searching every bookstore in the area I told myself that I was a grown woman and I would simply say that I would not be able to return that book and needed to pay for it. Of course, it was not that easy. After several questions which I did not answer to the first librarian's satisfaction a new librarians was called in to help. I could tell the librarian really wanted to know what happened to HER book. She said books always turn up and this one surely would also. But I stuck to my plan, check book in hand, and only replied," I will not be able to return that book. I need to pay for it."

Thank you Paul Newman for the entertainment. We'll miss you. You were a great actor, American. Sorry I destroyed your wife's book!

( Old story to all of you but a new twist!.... maybe)

Ball and Bath Special

While Hannan did not take advantage of our weekend special for 5 month old boys, nor did he stay to enjoy the bed and breakfast at Still Waters, he did come by Saturday night for the "Ball and Bath Special".

The ball game was shocking and bitterly disappointing...................

But the bath was fun!

" If she would just let me go.....

.................... so I could play with that duck."

What is it about babies in farm sinks? Moms and grand moms and aunts all love it!

Oh ,yea...... the back. No bending.

Come again soon Han Man and enjoy the bed and breakfast! (Bring your own breakfast. Okay?)

BREAKING NEWS: New Prime Number Discovered!

LOS ANGELES - Mathematicians at UCLA have discovered a 13 million-digit prime number, a long-sought milestone that makes them eligible for a $100,000 prize

The group found the 46th known Mersenne prime last month on a network of 75 computers running Windows XP. The number was verified by a different computer system running a different algorithm.

"We're delighted," said UCLA's Edson Smith, the leader of the effort. "Now we're looking for the next one, despite the odds."

Mersenne primes — named for their discoverer, 17th century French mathematician Marin Mersenne — are expressed as 2P-1, or two to the power of "P" minus one. P is itself a prime number. For the new prime, P is 43,112,609.

Me: Isn't this exciting and so mind boggling! I may not be able to post for a while. I'll be looking for the next prime number! I may need another computer. I wonder if the beast upstairs could help.

I just noticed I have a lot of breaking news for you girls. I'm just here to keep you informed!

Just sign me, The Math Nerd.

Breaking News in Fashion !

FALL IS HERE! Don't you love it! We have had some of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL days ever here at Still Waters this last week. This morning was really cool. So, I need to pass on some tips to all of you working girls as you transition to fall dressing.
On The Today Show this morning they had a segment on transition dressing. You know, how to wear some of your summer clothes on into early fall. The first woman had on a brown tank top and a brown and red skirt. The second woman had on a light colored tank top with medium gray slacks. The third woman had on a blue and turquoise sun dress with a little black tank underneath. Ready? You may want to take notes......I really wish I had pictures so you could get a better understanding of this concept. The first big "make over" was to add a belted brown sweater. The belt just gave it that "new" look. They also changed her footwear from sandals to pumps. For the second "make over" they added a jacket AND a little scarf AND boots. To the third outfit they added a black jacket and tights! Do you have this? Maybe I should recap. One should add a sweater or light jacket and shoes in the fall.
I think I may be able to get a part time job as a segment producer for The Today Show. I already have some thoughts about winter dressing........coats, boots, scarfs.tights..... And for spring.... And yes, girls, I mean to use these quotation marks.

Beauty and the Beast, cont.

Tale as old as time.
True as it can be.
Barely even friends.
Then somebody bends.
THE BEAST UPSTAIRS HAS BENT!!!!.... unexpectedly.
Just a little change.
Small to say the least!
I kept waiting for the townspeople to storm the front gate, I mean door and save ME. But little Chip, Leslie, came to the rescue and saved the beast- from being thrown from the top of the castle … well the southern window from the top of our house, anyway.
So, finally… We have an almost complete outfit for Bennett. Just needs button holes and buttons. If the camera that Jimmy gave me was up and running I would have a picture of a little red and white checked Jon-Jon suit with BLL monogrammed on the front in black right here.
It took sooo long I know its almost time for long pants but Leslie assured me Bennett would wear it every day until he out grows it. He’ll wear it with knee socks and a little turtle neck.
Jimmy said that is one nice outfit. It only took 3 months and several thousand dollars. He's not sure we can afford another one.

Be our Guest! Be our Guest!

Sometimes I think I’m living in The Jetson’s or maybe Beauty and the Beast except I have not seen the dishes dancing much less working. It seems that... I …WORK… for this house, especially the appliances and electronics. They all have minds of their own and want to run things around here. While I’m accustomed to my purse singing, I sometimes get raised eyebrows when my purse starts to chirp...crickets? But twice this past week I suddenly heard Christian music playing. Not just a ringtone but singing! The first time I just looked around and wondered briefly about the origin of the music since I was driving in Thomasville and there was a lot going on around me. The second time I was driving down our lane and since there is nothing around and my radio/ CD player was off, I was startled by the music and stopped to look into the strange occurrence. Well, my IPod had turned up its volume until I could hear the music coming out of my purse! I guess it just had something to share; a really good song that I needed to hear.Another day recently before dawn, I awoke to music coming from the den. It was my computer having a pre-dawn "update" conversation. Or so it said....Music?... I think it may have been just a date!..... Maybe an on-line romance. Also, the microwave and oven are very bossy with commands of: “TURN THE FOOD!”, “PUSH THE START BUTTON!” They are both so demanding a nd will repeat themselves until I comply. The fridge is quieter, but is warning that the water filter will soon need changing and I should order another. And as for the monster that lives upstairs (AKA the embroidery machine), I feed it and feed it and buy it anything that I think will make it more comfortable so that it can become a contributing member of our household, but it chooses not to work. I’ve considered opening that window and setting it free to see if it can fly. But at least they all need me. The computer told me just last week that it had captured a possible virus and needed my assistance.
Love you!

It 's gotta be love!

After spending a fun time with Bennett, Hannan, and their mommies today, Baby B stayed with me while his mommie went to an appointment. I am always so thankful for the screened porch when B is here since he always wants to be outside and the porch has ceiling fans. "Outside” is one of his earliest and favorite words which he pronounces as two distinct words. Out Side! Well we really enjoyed that porch today. After he played with his little scooter, building blocks and everything else on the porch while I enjoyed a tumbler of iced water B decided he really wanted a sip of my water. So, of course, his Juju gave him a sip. He enjoyed sipping that water and letting it roll out the sides of his mouth and down the front of his shirt. As he kept drinking my water I noticed he was trying to catch an ice chip in his mouth. After many tries he just reached in and got a handful of ice and stuffed it into his mouth… Well, maybe one piece actually made it to his mouth. The ice was on his shirt and down his shirt and on the porch floor but he was so thrilled and just hummed as he enjoyed his ice. It was soooo gooooood! My thirst had disappeared after the first bubble blowing incident so I let him reach that little hand that had been playing with the blocks and picking up things from the floor into my glass and enjoy his ice. After a few handfuls for himself he gave me a big smile and crammed that little hand full of ice into in my mouth! That was some sweet ice! The two of us had a ball eating ice, tossing ice on the porch then eating that ice after he picked it up from the floor. What can I say? I ‘M IN LOVE! Love makes you want to do whatever makes the object of your affection happy. We were a happy pair today! Hope you were too.
Love you!

Moved to Blogger 9/9/08

Friends and daughters,
I have moved my blogs to my new home to make it easier for all of us. Watch for my first give away.
Love you!

Welcome to the Century posted 8/19/08

Exciting day Monday!!! Heading down interstate seventy five with one IPod earpiece in my ear (so that I appeared not to break the law and also to save one ear in case I need to hear later in life), I was so excited about picking up my new HP laptop that I had purchased Sunday at Best Buy. WELCOME TO THE TWENTY-FIRST Century Allen family! A nice young Geek gave me my program loaded computer. He was very patient with answering questions and finding answers for my questions that he could not answer. I must have had rather intelligent questions because Geek did not roll his eyes at me one time. When I asked if I could put the I Tunes that was on our pc on my new computer so that I could download songs onto my IPOD, Geek said, “YOU have an IPod?” I think he thought I was groovy and oh so hip! I celebrated with a diet vanilla coke from Sonic and returned home to hook up the wireless router so I could login with the whole wide world. Geek said just plug it up. I left feeling great.
Then came the JUST! After several tries which included a lot of praying and a little crying I JUST gave up and went to school. I may have an IPod and I may have a laptop but I’m surely not a techno geek. I’ll try again later. Tomorrow is another day.

Late Night Visitor or "What? More New Friends?" 9/5/08

If I moved to France I would expect to live with the inhabitants of France. So when I moved into the field on the edge of the woods I guess I should have expected to live with the field mice and snakes. But I really was not prepared to share my house with either of them. Last night as I read while waiting to hear John McCain speak, I sensed movement in the hall between the powder room and our bedroom. I looked up from my book several times and did not see anything. I thought it was probably just a little mini stroke or a detached retina and kept reading… It was a pretty good mystery…. The door to our bedroom was closed and the light was off since Jimmy gave in to his exhaustion and went to bed before time for the speech. I finally looked up to see a tiny little mouse running around in the hall. He seemed lost or disoriented. He would stop and look around then run to the bedroom door and nose around the bottom of the door. Then he would stand on his hind feet, with his little pink mouse hands on the door and lean on the door. He would then run to another part of the door and again stand up on his hind feet and put those little pink mouse hands on the door- and TRY TO PUSH THE DOOR OPEN!!! Well, that’s what he appeared to be doing. He was very tiny and kind of cute but I would still not get out of my chair until he finally disappeared. I found a trap and put it in the hall. I still have not caught him. When I went to bed I closed and locked the door into the bedroom. I keep thinking about that little ant…… that moved a rubber tree plant!
Have a great weekend!

Fashion and politics posted: 9/4/08

Last week when I said that I would wait and see what John (McCain) offered this week in the way of new "friends" I had no idea what an offering he would have : a go getter "hockey mom" who lives to take on the BOY'S Club. She's got grit for sure. But she's also cute. And, she's a good dresser. So here's the real question. When does she have time to shop? Does she shop at Stein Mart? Does she shop on-line? Who dresses her? Did someone have to run out and purchase her a new wardrobe when the call came in? Do they "dress" every day in Alaska or do they wear snow boots, heavy woolen sweaters, and those fleece lined cords from Eddie? If they don't, who does?

Suddenly there is fashion in politics again. Not since Jackie was in the White House has fashion come from the political scene. Of course we did get the little bow just over the bangs from Lucy Johnson…. Just picture that……. If you can't, I have a picture somewhere of that very fashion... Anyway, it's not just designer gowns for the balls but FASHION AT EVERY STOP! The wives and THE WOMAN….Should be interesting.

New Friends posted : 8/28/08

People have asked me what I would do when I retired. I heard it as, “What in the world will YOU do after you retire? You don’t have a life except for school!” And there were times when I didn’t have much of one. But, I can say that it is not that difficult to make new friends. I have, however, had a few missteps. I thought I had a potential friend recently. I smiled at her and she smiled back. I was open and interested in her life. She told me all about her son. I imaged that our paths would cross frequently. Things were going great until she did not give me my cash back after I paid for my groceries with my debit card. Well, she was a little distracted by the new Key Customer cards. We’ll see how it works out. I really need to go see her. Our pantry is almost empty.
I also tried to make friends at ABAC. But no one was interested. They did not seem to want to add to their numbers. They seemed irrational and a little obtuse. Who knew Math people were so cold and calculating! ( HEE! HEE! I kill me!)
Oh, well! I have made some new friends. There is Rechelle (The Country Doctor’s Wife), who is a friend of Laurie’s friend Ree (The Pioneer Woman). Rechelle is LOL funny and Ree is an excellent cook and sometimes has give-aways for her friends. I now check in with Ree and Rechelle every morning. We all have such full lives!!!
Then there are Michael, Kerri and Misty. We spent a LOT of time together for a couple of weeks but they are busy young people so we don’t see each other as much now. I did catch Michael on the Today show this morning. He seemed happy and healthy. I’m waiting to hear from Kerri and Misty. They both hope to start families now that the games are over. I’ll miss seeing them every day but just want the best for them. They both need someone else to hug on and pop on the butt besides each other.
This week I am being courted by Michelle and Joe. I’m trying to hold off to see what John can offer me next week. At least I have my ABAC students. Some of them email me and some even call me at home.

Mondays!!! posted 8/27/08

Mondays! If you think Mondays are only hard if you are going to work, think again. After declaring Sunday a sick day - allergy symptoms had settled in my chest – and enduring a fever- filled night, Monday morning was not welcome. I wanted to go back to sleep and try again but of course since it was daylight I could not. My damp hair was sticking out in every possible direction and my red sunken eyes were highlighted by the dark circles. I could not get into my normal routine of hopping into the shower and getting ready for the day. By 11:00 I was still mopping around in my pjs - that are so ugly that even Hubby says they are ugly - when the mail man drove up to the back door. I grabbed a robe but since it seemed rude to cover my entire head I just hide the pjs and slinked to the door- making sure to cough and clear my throat often as I thanked him for driving all the way down the lane to deliver my book club package. I knew I should not have joined that book club.

My laptop and I are heading up to the secret room to hang out with the software deprived embroidery sewing machine, to lounge on the sofa and HIDE! We'll peer out the window at the UPS man and pretend we're not at home. Someone save this so you can document the beginning of my becoming the eccentric old crazy who lives in a hidden room in the house down the lane.

School StartedToday and I Didn't Go. posted 8/11/08

School started today and for the first time in thirty years I didn’t go. Oh, the guilt! I must walk twice today in the heat as a penance for not going to school. Oh the guilt!

But, oh, the guilty pleasures of being out in the world when everyone else is in school. The world does keep going when school starts. People shop, eat out, buy gas…. who knew? On Interstate 75 today only one person passed me as I drove just above the speed limit. The world keeps going but it seems today everyone on the outside had a slower pace. Maybe they were sighing with some relief that order had been restored. The first day of school… filled with endless possibilities and great expectations.

Anyway, while I was AWOL today, I talked with a cute little girl who was working in Talbot’s (I think she was too young to go to school). She had a tiny little nose ring- a diamond stud. In the past I would have judged her harshly over that, but I recently read in Ezkiel where God expresses His love for Jerusalem by describing how He rescued her from the side of the road where she had been left to die after her unwanted birth. It goes on to describe how He clothed her with fine clothing, gold and silver jewelry, and placed a jewel in her nose, earrings in her ears, and a beautiful crown on her head. Do you think God is trying to take the pleasure out of my judging?

Love you,

Pink Flip Flops posted 8/14/08

My pink flip flops just died. I have had them for many years. They were not fancy. Just plain drug store flip flops that I normally wore only occasionally at home. Since moving to the country I always wear shoes even inside and the pinks have, I mean had (it's still hard to believe they are gone) become one of my favs. They seldom left home, but lately they became part of a very cute outfit- my brown yoga pants and white sleeveless polo shirt. They added just the splash of color that I needed. Just this morning we were all at the grocery store. Don't worry family we were not at the national chain just a regional chain. But this afternoon as I was running up stairs to find the hammer that I needed to use on the turkey that I was preparing to grill, the little tong on my left shoe just gave out. At first I thought that I would be able to stick it back in as I did when I was a kid; but it was broken beyond repair. They were old and we had had a good time together. Or, maybe they committed suicide. Maybe my endless summer did them in.

Thank God I'm a Country Girl posted: 8-7-08

This morning I tried out the most beneficial 'race walking'- swinging arms at 90 degree with one foot in front of the other. After 10 minutes of panting in the 100+ heat/humidity my wicking shirt had wicked it's weight so I moseyed down to the mail box and back. Yes, I can see that by race walking for an hour a day just 5 times a week one could lose 35 pounds a year without any other changes. Assuming one lived through it.
Back at Still Waters Jimmy and I settled in to shell the pink eyes he had picked yesterday late and I was transported back to Briarwood Road, 1960s. (Yes, apparently it is still legal to shell peas in your own home if you live more than 8 miles from any city limits). I remember many summer days of shelling peas or beans then blanching, draining, cooling and finally bagging to freeze the little jewels. I loved peas and would count and recount the bags to see if we had enough to have them at least once a week. And since Daddy loved beans I wanted to make sure he had enough of those. I realize now how filling those shelves in the freezer satisfied something inside of me. I'm back to my roots. Thank God I'm a country girl!
Love you!
