A Day of Dedication

,

Last Sunday Hannan was dedicated to the Lord.
Not only did his mommie and daddy promise to "raise him up in the way he should go",

but we, the family and friends, made the same promise. So it was indeed a day of dedication for us all.
After a little nap,

Hannan really enjoyed being the center of attention.

And Hannan had was no shortage of admirers.....

Hannan: "This has been an awesome day, Bennett; the only thing to make it better would be if you could grab me one of those little cakes!"
Bennett: "Sorry, Hannan, I can't get to them either but if you can get to Jimpa, he'll give you some banana pudding and say its JUST bananas."

"Love you man!"

Rocks in the Lane

In my never ending quest for fitness-without-effort, I have tried to latch onto an interesting, and very true, statement that I recently heard: "Efficiency is the enemy of fitness." And yes, I am efficient. Yes, I have a touch of OCD, but it is a requirement for Math teachers under the Eisenhower Bill. And being a very efficient person down to my DNA, I found trying to be less efficient very difficult. Well, let's just say impossible.

I did make an effort. I decided to store the paper towels upstairs so that I would have to walk upstairs to replace the empty roll. I had never noticed how many paper towels we used. We seemed to be eating paper towels. They needed to be replaced daily. So, I simply learned not to use as many. Instead I learned to use kitchen towels. At least the laundry room is down stairs. (Note to self- buy larger rolls of paper towels. See, I can't help it!)

Then I decided I would get in an extra walk every day by taking the garbage down the lane to the big roll out can at the road. My first trip started out just fine. But apparently I had forgotten that I had made rock soup everyday that week and had thrown the leftovers into the garbage. I finally dragged the bag down the lane and the rocks escaped out the bottom of the bag and scattered along the lane where they remain to this day. And the quest continues!

Going Nowhere and Enjoying the Ride!

A very special mommie and her sweet little one came for the weekend at Still Waters. What a wonderful treat for us!
I do see Leslie often since she lives not-so-far away and Bennett sometimes does stay for the weekend, but the living not-so-far also means Leslie does not often spend the night and never spends an entire weekend. (Well, the closeness and Georgia football.... but the football also means Bennett gets to stay!)

Saturday afternoon we enjoyed the nice but overcast afternoon riding around the "plantation-ette" in the mustang.

As we drove up and down the lane in the convertible we noticed our Hispanic neighbor across the railroad tracks chipping golf balls in his yard. Even with the high cost of gas we were just driving around on our own property going nowhere.
And he was chipping golf balls in his own yard and talking on his cell phone. America! You gotta love it!

Motored to nowhere and a good time was had by all.

Summer pics of Bennett in the mustang.

" I have the keys now.....

..... I think I'll just take a spin around the yard!"

Miss Mallory Blue Eyes

Here's Mallory......................................... my sweet baby niece. Look at those blue eyes!

Mal, already standing at 8 months.................
Since she's been pulling up and walking around the furniture for two months.......

I predict she'll walk November 1st when she's nine months old.

AND "BUSY" is her middle name............

Okay......not really............. its actually Lane after her Mimi, Elaine who would have been absolutely crazy about her. As we all are.

Notice the auburn hair...............but we try not to mention "Auburn" around her. We trust she will follow many of her relatives' footsteps and be a Georgia Bulldog instead of following her mom "elsewhere".

Here's Mal and her dad, my baby brother........he's the one on the left......
I know I said he had the big head...... but, yes, that's him on the left. ....No, this is not his pumpkin patch...... He just insisted they put his name on the sign.

Pumpkins!

And best of all.................................................

She's official!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just ask the judge..............

Mark and Laura with
Mallory Lane Rogers.
Born Feb. 1
Papa's birthday

And just because its too cute to not include......

She smiles all the time and I don't have a really good picture of her smiling. Next time.

I love you Mallory Blue Eyes!

A Cow's Tale

I may still have a lot to learn about living in the country, including understanding that there is a difference in the way sound travels out here. We hear so many varied sounds - the farm trucks traveling down the road, the crop dusters overhead, the train coming down the track at all hours, and of course the animals....

We constantly hear animal sounds since we have quite a menagerie all around us; frogs, crickets, roosters, birds, chickens, horses, donkeys, and goats. We don't see most of these animals but we hear them. But the dogs we hear and see. I've grown accustomed to seeing the dogs that apparently had the run of our land before we homesteaded here. They take a tour every morning and we often meet when I am also out walking.

One day as I was walking back down the lane toward our house, just before the sharp bend that turns into our yard, a little beagle rounded that bend. He was bouncing along wagging his tail, happily out for his morning stroll when he suddenly spotted me coming toward him. Well, he just circled around in a u-turn and headed back in the direction he had just come at the same steady pace.... never looked back... never changed his speed..... passed in front of our house, rounded the bend on that side of the pond, and then disappeared out of my view as he entered the lane in the tall grass.

Anyway, about the traveling sounds..... on one particular morning, in addition to the usual sounds, I heard a cow mooing. The sound seemed to be coming from right at the end of our lane. I rushed down the lane to see the cow that I just knew would be standing at the entrance to our lane..... On the lam following her escape from some neighbor's pen. Since I had been stopped twice by the goats and horses walking along the road in the mornings I knew it happened! I so wished that I had a camera with me. What a picture that would be!...... I knew that you would want to see that. ...A cow greeting me as I walked down the lane for the morning paper.... Well, I walked as fast as I could to the end of the lane.....I did not see the cow. I hurried into the road because I was sure that cow had just walked on a little father down the road.....After a couple of minutes I heard the cow again. She was indeed down the road - in her normal pen, maybe a half a mile away. Sigh...... And across the road, watching me with great interest were the dogs that regularly walk our land. When our eyes met they turned their heads to the side. They really wanted to understand me. We all need to learn to live together. Except the snakes and the mice. They need to move.

What do you think I would have done with that cow?

At least it got my heart rate up!

Hope you all have a great Expo week whether you celebrate it in your land or not.

number three!

Congrats Leslie! Your books will be delivered soon.

Due to a last minute entry, members of my own household were disqualified! And the last minute entry took that slot.
Thanks for all of the entries. I wish I had a book for each of you. Look for future give aways. Maybe something EVEN better! Maybe dinner for two at Still Waters. Or a weekend of pampering. Or a jar of rice. Or due to the stress, this may be it!! Thanks Wyo for the books.

Celebrate Autumn

Labor day has long since passed and, for us unseasonably, South Georgia has actually experienced autumn already. The mornings have been cool and even the ninety degree afternoons have been bearable because of the lack of humidity.

And the shadows! The morning shadows have been long and somehow comforting as they span the lanes, the ponds, and the fields.

In town the long shadows crossing the streets seem so invitingly cool. They acknowledge that we have survived the intense heat of another long, hot, hot summer; that we survived the natty dog days of another August; that we survived another invasion of the lusty love bugs.
So, the celebration of Autumn begins. South Georgia fall colors may not follow the same time frame as other parts of the country....... but we have color!

Pass the crisp white
little Methodist Church where the dogwoods are still wearing their greenery and will until almost Thanksgiving!

Down the wildflower lined dirt road....

bearing to the right to pass through the mimosa trees.......................

take Chinaberry Lane, that skirts the cotton field.........

to Golden Pond...............

where the little cabin stands at the edge of the woods.......

.......................................and the shadows live!

Rogers Farms: Remembering all the farmers who loved the fall harvest and this land.......
Thanks Granddaddy, Daddy, Uncle Glenn and all those who came before you. Thank you for the legacy you left us.

Don't miss the give away!!!!
